The Devils will start off their road trip 0-2 falling to the Red Wings 4-3. New Jersey again started off sluggish but didn’t fall into too deep a hole early. They fight back to tie the game 1-1 in the second. Sami Vatanen then scores a beauty on the power play to put the Devils ahead 2-1.
The Devils then shortly after will get scored on to tie it 2-2. In the third Palmieri will draw a holding penalty on Kronwall only to see Will Butchers pass knocked down and put into their net for a shorthanded goals putting Detroit up 3-2. Schneider made the first save but the puck sat their and Detroit put it in the open net.
The Devils would then pull Cory to get the extra attacker and get a powerplay with 40 seconds left in the game. Boyle losses the face off and the puck gets cleared out of the zone and banks of the side board and goes all the way down the ice….. into the Devils net.
Marcus Johansson would score on a wrist shot with 4 seconds remaining and they lose the game 4-3. The Devils again shot themselves in the foot by starting slow on the road which never puts you in position to win games. Although they scored two power play goals it was not a clean enough game from them, hence them getting scored on short handed. Again there was not enough consistent offensive presence from all the lines until late into the game. The fourth line has to be able to produce more offense, it cant all rely on the first line.
New Jersey needs to clean up their game now and it better start quickly as they are starting to leave points on the table and at the end of the season that will kill a team hoping to make another playoff run. The Devils are now 5-4-1 on the season after their great 4-0 start.
